How to get more done and stay focused on what matters to you!
I am a busy mom and of 3 so I completely understand when you are so busy that you feel like you’re just surviving some days! Being in survival mode all the time should not be the norm though, and I’ve worked a lot on making my time spent on whatever I am doing very intentional. We genuinely can’t do everything, so it’s important to be intentional about what’s important for you and to choose that for yourself.
One thing to note is that it’s important to not compare. Other people may have different values and may have different needs during this time in their lives. The intention is not to get everything done, it’s to get things done that are important to you.
I hope these tips on how to get more done will help you feel at peace with the time that you are spending!
how to get more done
- Something that has worked well for me is that when something pops into my head that I want to get done and make sure I don’t forget, I have a note on my phone where I pop it in when it comes to me. That way, I don’t need to stress that I’ll forget about it, and I can stay present and not be derailed when I’m focusing on the thing that I’m doing in the present moment. Just this morning, I was with my son, and something important came to my thoughts that I wanted to make sure I didn’t forget. Instead of leaving my focus and intention on spending time with him, I grabbed my phone, quickly jotted it down on my notes, and knew I would then come back to it and schedule it in my calendar later.
- Create systems that work for you. Keep in mind that these may be systems that wouldn’t work for anyone else! What works for you? What works for your stage of life right now? What works for your family? Be intentional about focusing on yourself and your family instead of comparing what’s working well with your friends or family members. When I started doing this, everything changed for me and my family. I was able to really ask myself what would work best for our current situations. And keep in mind that these things don’t need to be set in stone! You don’t need to commit to a lifetime of doing something. Seasons change as your kid’s schedules change as well.
- Another thing that works well for me right now is to batch my work. So, for example, I like to write all of my blog posts on Mondays. I like to do certain loads of laundry on certain days. Oftentimes when I thought a certain system would work, I realized that it actually didn’t flow as well as I thought it would, so I have adjusted. You’re the boss of you and you can change things if they aren’t working! Create systems that fit well in your schedule and preferences, and then stick with them.
- Expect yourself to not want to do the thing that you’ve said you would do when it comes time to do it, and do it anyway. Make it easy for yourself to follow through. My tips on exercising are a great example of this. I set myself up for success! Know that there isn’t anything wrong with you when you don’t want to do it. Trust your past self and know that you planned it on your calendar for a reason.
- Speaking of calendars, if something isn’t on my calendar, it probably won’t get done. Utilize a calendar system that works for you. I like my digital Google calendar. I put items in on my phone or my computer, and they sync to my Apple calendar. This is the perfect solution for me because it works me. Some of my friends use a paper calendar and it’s the perfect solution for them because it works for them. There is no right way, only your right way!
- Look at items a week in advance. Something I like to do is view my calendar for the week on Sundays. I like to talk with my husband Tyler and see if there is anything that he hasn’t shared with me yet that is on his calendar that I need to be aware of. If there is something he needs to know about, like if I’m going to dinner with my friends, I will include him on the calendar invite so he knows that he solo parenting for bed time that night. We also are able to coordinate babysitters this way as well so aren’t scrambling last minute.
- Set up a morning routine that works for you and be consistent with it. I’ll tell you one thing – almost always I don’t want to do it when I wake up in the morning, and 100% of the time I’m glad I’m did!
I hope this blog post on how to get more done is helpful for you! These items make a massive difference in helping me stay intentional about the things that are important to me and what I spend my time on and accomplish.
