How to keep your closet clean and organized so it’s easy to get dressed every day!
Keeping your closet clean can be tricky when you aren’t intentional about it, so I’m here to share my tips on how I keep it organized and know what I have access to and what I can wear each day. Something that feels stressful to me is a cluttered closet where clothes are shoved in and I don’t even know what I have access to or where I can find certain items. It adds more time getting dressed in the morning and I end up buying more and wasting money because I forget that I have certain items!
I’ve create a system that makes getting dressed in the morning really easy, and I am able to see what I have to wear saving me time, money and energy.
how to keep your closet clean
- Categorize Your Clothing: For me, categorizing clothing items by type is really important. I like to have all of my pants in one section, all of my short sleeves in one section an all of my long sleeves in one section. Sweaters go together in another section, skirts are together and dresses as well. If you need a green basic tee that you’ll wear again and again, grab this one in the short sleeve and this one in the long sleeve. These have saved me so much money!
- Organize by Item Type and then by Item Color: My tee shirts are organized from light to dark. Organize each section this way! This way, if I know I want to wear a short sleeved black tee, I know exactly where it’s at.
- Buy Hangers That Look the Same: These hangars are my absolute favorite and have changed the cohesive look of my closet! It’s amazing what a difference it has made having all of my hangers be the same. I buy the blouse hangers for my shirts and sweaters and the hangers with the bar for my pants.
- Free Up Closet Space: Go through your closet at the end of each season and pull out items that you didn’t wear. Read this blog post if it’s hard for you to get rid of items. Ask yourself if you’ll really wear it in seasons to come, and if not, give it away to someone you know or a donation company so that others can love the items and get good use out of them. It really frees up your brain space when you aren’t bogged down by so much stuff. This book has been phenomenal in helping me let go of items that felt nostalgic. I’ll keep some items still, but I’v been able to feel peaceful about parting with many items.
- Add Baskets to Your Closet and Label Them: These are my favorite ones. Tyler and I have baskets for our winter items as well as hats and small handbags. Having things labels allows you to put them back in the right spot the first time instead of telling yourself that you’ll do it later and then ending up with a mess.
- Organize Your Jewelry: This jewelry organizer is truly the best one I have owned. I love that it keeps my necklaces organized, my rings and bracelets have a spot and it takes up such little space.
- Organize Your Shoes: Store shoes the left shoe facing forward and the right shoe facing the opposite way to fit more shoes in your closet in a way that looks cohesive.
I hope this blog post on how to keep your closet clean is helpful to you! These tips make a massive difference for me in feeling less stressed and more calm. I love knowing what I have and being able to find it all easily!
